Oshkosh Defense wins USPS next-generation truck contract

The U.S. Postal Service awarded Oshkosh Defense, a wholly owned subsidiary of Oshkosh Corp., an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract to produce its next-generation delivery vehicle, the USPS’s first large-scale fleet procurement in three decades. The competitively awarded contract allows for the delivery of between 50,000 and 165,000 vehicles over a period of 10 years.

Oshkosh Defense will manufacture both zero-emission battery electric vehicles and fuel-efficient, low-emission internal combustion engine vehicles, upgrading the USPS fleet to be increasingly sustainable. Under the contract, the USPS has committed to pay Oshkosh Defense $482 million to initiate engineering efforts to finalize the production vehicle design and for tooling and factory build-out activities that are necessary prior to vehicle production.

Georgia-Pacific, gener8tor launch startup accelerator

Nationally ranked startup accelerator gener8tor and Georgia-Pacific announced a new program to fuel the growth of startups in Northeast Wisconsin. The partnership will launch 1915 Studios, a pre-accelerator for early-stage companies innovating within hygiene, Internet of Things and sensing. 1915 Studios will operate from space in Georgia-Pacific’s Consumer Products R&D center in Neenah.

The studio is a free accelerator for early-stage technology startups following the model of gener8tor’s gBETA program, which operates more than 20 other programs across the country. The program provides participants with intensive and individualized coaching and access to gener8tor’s national network of mentors, potential customers, corporate partners and investors.

1915 Studios’ 12-week program is designed to help startups prototype and build their products, gain early customer interest in their product or idea and establish metrics that make them competitive applicants for full-time accelerators or seed investment.

Georgia-Pacific’s Neenah Technical Center is a research and development facility with more than 250 scientists, engineers, technicians and support staff from throughout the world who offer centuries of papermaking, product development and testing expertise. NTC houses pilot lines and various labs supporting the company’s consumer products business and beyond.

Startups from around the country are encouraged to apply for the programming and resources that 1915 Studios offers, including free space, prototyping and additive manufacturing technology. The first cohort will kick off this summer and will focus on product-based solutions such as hygiene, IoT and sensing startups. A second cohort will run in the fall. Boldt partners to offer modular COVID-19 vaccine delivery unit

The Boldt Co. is building a modular unit designed to deliver COVID-19 vaccines safely and efficiently.

Designed by Boulder Associates Inc. and built by Boldt, the prefabricated, modular units are designed to be deployed in any location, provide safe and efficient vaccination settings for health care workers and individuals, and serve as a long-term space solution post-pandemic.

Developed in collaboration with public health experts, VaxMod can deliver 39 percent more vaccines per hour with 7 percent lower staffing levels, compared to model vaccination clinics identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. VaxMod is designed for rapid deployment and to administer vaccinations to walk-in patients or individuals in their vehicles. 

The system can be scaled to meet the volume needed in specific communities. The operation is estimated to vaccinate more than 1,100 patients per eight-hour shift and can be staffed using 27 full-time employees. Modules can function as freestanding units or be connected to one another with segregated spaces for health care workers and patients.  

In a post-pandemic setting, the VaxMod can be repurposed for a variety of uses. Space can be modified and used for rapid testing and screening for patient populations or annual flu clinics. Modules could also be used for health screening and maintenance clinics to fill a critical need in the care of chronic diabetic or cardiovascular patients.

Bemis Manufacturing invests in cardiovascular monitoring device

Bemis Manufacturing Co. increased its investment in a New York startup that developed an in-home cardiovascular monitoring device. Casana, previously known as Heart Health Intelligence Inc., recently closed on a $14 million funding round that included follow-on capital from Bemis. 

In 2020, Bemis led a $2.2 million seed round in the company, which developed The Heart Seat, an internet-connected toilet seat that captures cardiac data from a patient’s home. Casana previously stated Bemis will produce The Heart Seat.

Casana will use the financing to bring The Heart Seat to market. Casana plans to pursue FDA clearance to further validate the clinical-grade technology built into The Heart Seat, which makes it a unique Internet of Things device for heart disease management. 

The Heart Seat is a cloud-connected, self-contained toilet seat-based cardiovascular monitoring system that measures the health parameters for assessing heart health. It already has been tested through multiple peer-reviewed research studies and is pursuing Food and Drug Administration clearance. By using the passive and consistent home cardiac monitoring data from The Heart Seat, doctors can gain a better understanding of chronic conditions and a greater ability to address patients’ needs as they arise.

NEWMA to hold President’s Cup, virtual youth outreach event

The NEW Manufacturing Alliance has created a virtual Take Your Child to Work Day event parents can do with their children from home.

The live Zoom event, designed for third- through eighth-graders and their parents, will feature a car-building project and will be hosted on April 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. It will begin with step-by-step instructions from a representative from the Einstein Project. In addition, NEWMA will hold its annual President’s Cup scholarship golf scramble on June 2 at the Blackwolf Run River Course in Kohler. The all-day event pairs participants with a manufacturing leader from around the region for a four-person golf scramble.

Insight to host golf outing, networking event in June

Insight Publications will host the inaugural Insight Open golf outing and networking event at High Cliff Golf Course on June 17. The event begins with an 8 a.m. registration, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. 

The format will be an 18-hole, four-person scramble. The cost is $380 per foursome and $95 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf with power cart, range balls, two drink tickets during golf and a boxed lunch. A networking event with a complimentary drink ticket and  hors d’oeuvres will follow golfing.
